MISSION & HISTORY.
Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio (MMI) is a socio-cultural Organization of Ibibio young adults formed in Calabar on 1st August, 1987 when the present Akwa Ibom State of Nigeria was a component of the old Cross River State. It is registered with the Nigerian Corporate Affairs Commission under the companies and Allied Matters Act of 1990.
A pressure group uniquely different with a divinely driven mission to re-engineer, restructure and build Akwa Ibom State and its people for the good of all based on love, unity, and strength.
The Mboho is an active virile, and prolific association of a forward looking, God-fearing, creative, dedicated, and self-sacrificing Ibibio people. Mboho members draws their inspiration from the 1928 declaration of the legendary Ibibio Union of old, which catered for the entire mainland part of the Old Calabar Province-Ibibio, Annang, Oron, Eket, Ubium and the other subgroups.
As a proactive Ibibio organization with a global perspective, Mboho has more than 58 Chapters in major cities in Nigeria and the diaspora. Some of the diaspora chapters are London, Manchester (UK), Heathrow, Essex all in UK: Bologna, Italy; Vienna, Austria; Dublin, Northern Ireland; Berlin, Germany; Houston, Los Angeles, Detroit, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington DC, Atlanta, New Jersey, Philadelphia, New York, Dallas all in USA; Douala in Cameroun and Johannesburg, South Africa with some significant coordination work ongoing to establish Chapters in other parts of the world.
Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio International promotes inter-ethnic cooperation and consistently reaches out to other organizations and groups of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and beyond. As a pragmatic demonstration of this philosophy, Mboho extended membership to non-Ibibios like Alhaji Abdullahi Maccido, a prominent Prince of the Sokoto Caliphate, Chief Joshua Dariye, the former Governor of Plateau State, Alhaji Bukar Mandara of Borno State, Senator Ike Nwachukwu, former Governor Donald Duke of Cross River State, Engr. (Dr.) Chris Ekpenyong, the former Deputy Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Chief (Barr.) Peter Linus Umoh, the former Speaker of the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly and His Excellency Akparawa (Dr.) Godswill Akpabio just to mention a few.
Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio believes in unity, seeks, and always pursues peace. To this end, it embarked on a unity tour of the 31 Local Government Areas of Akwa Ibom State and conducted a unity rally of 3 Senatorial Districts the State. Furthermore, it promotes unity by sponsoring the Mboho Unity Football Cup among Secondary Schools in the State. Mboho Mkparawa Ibibio participates in other robust community development, philanthropic and compassionate content within its communities.
The Mboho has made significant investment in education and other sectors.
– Established Mboho Unity Schools, a model academic institution comprising the Nursery/Primary and the Secondary (High School) arms.
– Completed a 9 classroom block (USA building) @ Mboho Unity School.
– Donates regularly to charities.
– Awards Scholarships, bursaries and gives financial support to deserving and needy students carrying out academic projects.
– Instituted “Obong Nyong Essien Scholarship Scheme” at the Secondary and Tertiary levels of academic pursuits. Beneficiaries get the award irrespective of their places of origin or ethnic background in Akwa Ibom State.
– Supports and collaborates with Ibibio Language Writers Association (ILWA) in the publication of works in the Ibibio language.
– Conducts an annual essay competition in the Ibibio language for secondary school students in Akwa Ibibio State.
– Organizes the biennial Obong Sampson Udo Etuk Memorial Lectures/Award in honor of the late Ibibio Patriarch and first President of the legendary Ibibio Union. At the lecture, contemporary/topical issues affecting the Ibibio Nation, Akwa Ibom State and Nigeria are discussed. Outstanding individuals and corporations are horned for their meritorious contributions to humanity at the lectures.
– Building and commissioning of an ultramodern Secretariat/Community Centre as its International Headquarters in Uyo, the biggest of such edifice to be owned by any socio-cultural organization in Nigeria.
– Incorporated Mboho Investments Ltd, with 95% shareholding in its quest for financial independence and is in the process of establishing its own bank, Mboho Microfinance Bank
– Established a farm that produces food crops for the people.
– Incumbent Grand Patron is Late Air Marshal Nsikak Eduok (Rtd).
– Past Grand Patrons were Sir Egbert Udo Udoma and Dr. Clement Isong.
– The late Emir of Kano, Alhaji Ado Bayero, was a life Patron of the organization.
– Founding President was Late Akparawa Anietie Ekong.
– Past Presidents were: Akparawa (Sir) Valentine Attah, Ph.D; Akparawa Okon B. Imerh; Akparawa Elder Udo Sam Umoatan; Akparawa (Dr.) Okon J. Emah; Akparawa (Obong) Godwin Ntuk Udeh; Akparawa (Otuekong) Sylvester J. Akpan, Ph.D; Akparawa (Elder) Nse Ubeh and Late Akparawa (Elder) Monday Etokakpan, JP, FCIL, who tragically died in office on April 25, 2018 and had been buried on Saturday, June 2, 2018.
Mboho is presently being led by Akparawa James Edet who is the 11th International President of the organization.
The motto of the Mboho is “Oneness for Service”.
